Fullerton, CA – If you haven't made plans yet for New Year's Eve, the City of Fullerton would like to make a date with you.

The city is looking for volunteers to help in presenting the 22nd annual "First Night Fullerton," a family-oriented, alcohol-free New Year's Eve celebration featuring live entertainment, children's activities and a fireworks finale.

The festivities will take place from 7 p.m. to midnight Tuesday, Dec. 31, and will feature dozens of events staged at numerous sites in the streets, sidewalks and buildings of historic downtown Fullerton.

            Admission is free.

The "First Night" program began in Boston in 1976, as a cap to the nation's bicentennial.  The program's goal is to broaden public appreciation of the visual and performing arts while offering an alternative to the traditional New Year's Eve celebrations which focus on alcohol and drinking.

There are now several hundred cities "First Night" cities throughout the United States and Canada.  Fullerton was the first California city to offer the event, and is the only Orange County community to present a “First Night” celebration this year.

Volunteers are needed to help staff information booths, serve as a stage or site manager, or host at one of the activity sites.

Most volunteers' shifts will begin at 6 p.m., and will end by 12:30 a.m.  Volunteers are able to participate in the countdown to the New Year, as well as watch the fireworks finale.

Throughout the evening, volunteers will also be able to take breaks to catch some of the special entertainment planned for the event.

Deadline for volunteers to register is Monday, Dec. 9.

Persons wishing to volunteer may contact the James Kashiwada, special events coordinator for the City of Fullerton, at (714) 738-3338.

Persons requiring special accommodations to participate in “First Night” are asked to notify the Fullerton Museum Center staff at (714) 738-6454 prior to Dec. 31.

"First Night Fullerton" is sponsored by the City of Fullerton.  For more information on “First Night” please go to http://www.cityoffullerton.com/news/displaynews.asp?NewsID=1717
